Offered here is a wonderful piece of Tiffany history from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The sterling silver grip is stamped with the number "6" along with a special exhibition cartouche: a globe over a capital "T," which identifies items as Tiffany Columbian Exposition pieces. The other end of the sheath is marked "TIFFANY & CO." and "STERLING." The sheath is fully etched with a scene depicting two horse riders deep in a spruce wood lot. Below the riders is a pack of running hounds. The blade of the folding knife measures 3 1/4 inches. The overall length of the knife is 7 1/8 inches with an additional lanyard loop. The handles are sterling sliver. From the late 1880s to the early 1900s, Tiffany & Co. created some the most spectacular and expensive highly embellished luxury goods showcased at international exhibitions. This knife is reportedly one of 1,159 pieces Tiffany exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and of the grand total of 1,159 pieces, only 358 were silver "fancy articles." Tiffany planned and manufactured for four years up until the event, and for their efforts took home several notable prizes including the grand prize for silverware as well as being named court jewelers for a European princess.
