Engraved and Inlaid J. Dusseau of Culemborg Flintlock Pistol From the Famous Henk L. Visser Collection

Jan/Jean Dusseau is identified as born in Bern, Switzerland, and active in Rotterdam, Holland, c. 1748-1759 and then as the first director of the National Gun Factory at Culemborg. He died in 1777. This pistol is featured in "The Visser Collection" Vol. 1, Part 4, on pages 482-483 and dates to c. 1765. It has a smoothbore, two-stage, Damascus barrel with a silver blade front sight, banded transition, molded designs on the breech section, a copper/brass crescent moon and tower mark (possibly a variation of the Culemborg city mark), and silver scroll, pin, and band accents. The lock is signed "I * DUSSEAU/A * CULEMBURG" (sic) and has a bridled pan, beveled edges, and groove in the pointed tail. The furniture is gilt brass with rococo style floral and scroll patterns. The stock has raised molding, tear drop flats, a raised relief rococo design at the barrel tang,"1075" in white on the left side, and nice figure. Provenance: The H.L. Visser Collection; Property of a Gentleman

ConditionVery good with attractive Damascus patterns, aged patina on the brass and silver, dark gray and brown patina on the iron, resurfaced frizzen, minor pitting, and general mild wear. The restored stock is good and has repaired cracks in the wrist and forend, distinct carving, and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
