Description:

Manufactured in 1887, the second year of the production. The Model 1886 with its reliable action and powerful cartridge offerings would have been a welcome companion to any rancher or hunter in the American west. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address in front of the rear sight and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper right barrel flat is period stamped twice with "E.M. JONES", who may have been a western retailer or a proud owner, and there is a "0" stamped on the upper left. The two-line patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, elevation adjustable notch rear sight, and a tang mounted peep sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter states the serial number for this rifle was applied on June 9, 1887, confirms the octagon barrel in .40-82 caliber, and plain trigger, and the rifle was received in the warehouse on July 6, 1887 and shipped the next day.

Rating Definition:

Good, showing mostly a smooth bright grey patina and silvered remnants of the original case colors with some scattered light pitting, having the appearance of a rifle that was used hard but well-cared for. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood shows similar signs of use with a few hairline cracks and the minor dings and scratches typical of a western working gun. Mechanically excellent. A rifle that would look right at home propped up against the fence post of a western ranch!
