Description:

This Volcanic Lever Action Carbine was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company c. 1856. The full rib barrel has a pinch-top front sight blade and brass magazine follower. The top barrel flat partially retains the three-line Volcanic legend. The receiver has a dovetail mounted rear sight with elevation wheel. The hammer spur is hand-knurled. The straight grain walnut stock has a brass buttplate with sharply pointed spur. The matching serial number is found on the grip frame under the left grip panel, both grip panels and right side of the lever. Volcanic arms have a significant place in the development of American firearms. The combination of a self-contained cartridge, integral, multi-shot magazine and self-cocking lever action made Volcanic pistols and carbines the most advanced firearms of their day. The key features of the Volcanic pistols and carbines were refined and incorporated in the Henry rifle and Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles and carbines. Finally, shirt maker Oliver Winchester's investment in Volcanic Repeating Arms introduced him to the firearms business.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with the barrel retaining 95% plus of the period quality brown finish and the frame retaining 90% of the replated silver. The grips and stock show a few minor handling marks and an overcoat of varnish. The buttplate retains 50% of the silver plating. Mechanically fine.
