ULRICH", standard barrel markings, 3 inch wedges of floral scroll engraving at either breech, single gold bad at either muzzle with accompanying scroll wedge, chokes marked "IMP CYL"/"MOD", and 3 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The blued boxlock action displays gorgeous modified Grand American pattern engraving consisting of near full coverage floral scroll engraving surrounding four gold inlaid game scenes. The left shows a pointer in a field scene, the right has a setter in a field scene, the underside shows an eagle pulling a salmon from a river in a mountain scene, and a bust of a setter on the triggerguard all rendered in highly detailed gold inlay. The gun features a gold plated single selective trigger and tang mounted automatic safety switch. Stunningly figured, fancy 21-B pattern fleur-de-lis checkered beavertail forend with engraved fittings, "CUSTOM MADE/FOR/E. E. ULRICH" marked in gold on the shoe, rotary latch release, and ebony tip inlay. The pistol grip stock is of the same exceptional quality with matching fleur-de-lis checkering and engraved and gold inlaid "GRAND/AMERICAN" grip cap, blank gold inscription oval, and checkered bare butt. The gun includes a second matching barrel set in 20 gauge with matching engraving, rib marking, and its own beavertail forend with matching gold inlaid shoe. The extra barrel measures 26 inches and features 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors and choke marked "MOD"/"FULL". Also included is a leather bound Winchester takedown case with four nickel snap caps (two .410 bore and two 20 gauge), nickel oiler, Model 21 advertising, and part of an autobiographical article on Edward E. Ulrich from the Autumn 1999 "Double Gun Journal". A set of guns custom built for Ulrich with similar engraving are pictured on page 322 of Ned Schwing's "Winchesters Finest: The Model 21" in which it is stated that Nick Kusmit carried out the engraving on that set. The following two lots are numbered in sequence to this gun. Barrel measurements for the 20 gauge set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .616/.615 inches; choke constriction .001/.001 inches; minimum wall thickness .037/.037 inches. Barrel and stock measurements for the .410 bore set (R/L): choke constriction .000/.000 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 9/16 inch drop at heel; 14 5/16 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs 5 oz. Provenance: The Buffalo Bill Center of the West

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall as custom embellished to current configuration, retaining 99% plus blue and gold finishes with limited minor handling evidence, a tiny amount of spotting on the forend release, a few dings at the forend fitting to wood junctions, and sharp checkering on the wood. The extra barrel set is also excellent and the case is excellent. Mechanically excellent.
