Description:

The accompanying factory letter confirms the extra lightweight takedown configuration with a 22 inch round barrel (caliber not listed), plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman front and rear sights, half magazine, and hard rubber shotgun buttplate. The letter also states the rifle was received in the warehouse on April 17, 1903 and shipped the next day. Twenty-two inch barrels on Model 1894s are a very scarce special order feature even on the lightweight examples. The half magazine, deluxe walnut, and shotgun buttplate are also special order features. As Winchester expert and author George Madis noted, "Winchester with a number of special and deluxe features are becoming impossible to find" (see "The Winchester Book," page 409). The Lyman sights feature a beaded blade front and an elevation adjustable rear. The barrel is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight, "30 WCF" at the breech, and the two-line nickel steel marking on the left side. The upper tang has the three-line model/patent marking. The serial number is stamped on the underside of the frame. As noted in the factory letter the forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered deluxe XXX walnut. The checkering is of the factory H-style. The stock has a Winchester hard rubber grip cap and shotgun buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is stamped "16370 XXX B." The assembly number "16370" is repeated on the stock inlet.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and magazine tub retain 70% original blue finish, 80% original blue remains on the bolt, and the frame, takedown collar and forend cap retain 30% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. Traces of original nitre blue remain on the loading gate. Traces of original case colors remain on the lever. The refinished wood is fine with limited handling marks and crudely recut checkering. There are a couple of stress cracks at the buttplate screws. Mechanically excellent.
