Description:

Measuring 18 1/2 inches overall, with a 12 1/2 inch double edged spear point blade. The hilt is constructed from carved bone or antique ivory, with a crowned double-headed eagle pommel, brass studded red velvet wrapped grip, and a 4 1/2 inch wide crossguard with harpy quillions, a bust of a man's head on one side and the name "STEPH/BATORI". This likely indicates Stephen Bathory, Prince of Transylvania and King of Poland from 1576 to 1586. The scabbard is constructed similarly to the hilt, with a red velvet covering of the back face and the obverse covered with elaborate carving, featuring a lion and gryphons at the throat, a Polish coat of arms, a nest of snakes, a harpy, and a toothed serpent fighting a cockatrice at the tip. Provenance: The Dr. Gerald Klaz Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade shows a mixed gray patina, with areas of oxidization and shallow pitting. The velvet shows mild wear and staining, concentrated on the grip, with a fresher appearance to the back of the sheath. The furniture is fine, with a number of age cracks and minor chips, showing attractive aged color and sharp detail in the carving.
