Included with this lot is an unsigned, photocopied letter from a prior owner, which attributes this pistol as a family heirloom. Per the narrative, the pistol was the property of an unnamed 1st Sergeant in the 104th Infantry Division, who "obtained the Luger pistol during combat operations in Germany, most likely, in 1944, possibly during the Battle of the Bulge, in which he was engaged", and then shipped it home. The pistol stayed in the Sergeant's possession until his passing in 1998, and was retained by his widow until her passing in 2016, when it was inherited by the writer of the letter, the son, who in turn sold it along with the holster and ammunition in 2022. Arriving in Europe in September of 1944, the 104th was involved in multiple combat actions, including holding a section of the line during the Battle of the Bulge, participating in the containment of the Ruhr Pocket, and eventually fought their way into Saxony, where they made contact with their opposite numbers in the Soviet Red Army. Returning to the U.S. the 104th took several months to fully demobilize, and was fully inactivated in late December of 1945. This pistol, manufactured in 1936 during the early phases of rearmament under Hitler, is in exceptional condition; most of the weapons already in German inventory at the outbreak of hostilities were harshly used and show wear and tear appropriate to war service. Blade front and notch rear sights, with "S" on the chamber and the "Type C-1" Krieghoff logo on the toggle, and "eagle/swastika/2" and "eagle" proofs on the appropriate parts. The full serial number is marked on the front frame, the left side of the receiver, and the alloy magazine base. The last two digits of the serial number are on the side plate, breech block, toggle assembly, trigger, take down lever, and side plate. Fitted with a pair of brown plastic grips with smooth borders. Included with the lot is a brown leather flap holster marked "1936" and "WaA387", a blued steel "fxo" magazine with unnumbered base, takedown tool, and three "1944 dou" labeled boxes of 9mm ammunition.

Excellent, with 97% of the original blue finish, showing some wear on the high edges, a plum and gray tone to the tops of the toggle knobs, and mild handling marks overall. 95% of the bright original straw color is present on the small parts, with vivid niter blue on the magazine catch and sear spring, thinning on the left grip screw, and strong on the right grip screw. The grips are also excellent, with mild dings, and the holster is very good with some cracking and scuffing. The ammo boxes are unsealed, but are full, with some staining and verdigris buildup on the rounds. Mechanically excellent.
