Description:

This is an early example of a gun from the famous Scottish gunmaker Daniel Fraser. According to Nigel Brown in "British Gunmakers, Volume Two – Birmingham, Scotland & the Regions" on p. 90, the D. & J. Fraser signature and Leith Street Terrace address dates this gun to circa 1878-1888. With browned Damascus barrels with concave rib between signed “D. & J. FRASER. 4 LEITH ST. TERRACE, EDINBURGH” and with a bead front sight. Birmingham “Not For Ball” black powder proof marks and nitro reproof marks. Border and scroll engraved action with carved percussion fences and rebounding back action locks each signed “D. & J. FRASER”. Figured 14 1/4 inch straight hand stock with heel and toe plates, the grip and forearm checkered. The forearm with lever fastener, the butt with silver oval initial escutcheon engraved with a monogram on the underside. Weight 7 lbs. 14.5 oz. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrels retain 98% rebrowned finish. The rib signature is softened. The action and locks are mostly bright with clear engraving, slight traces of original casehardened finish visible in sheltered areas, stronger but faded casehardened finish to the water table, and strong casehardened finish to the inside of the forearm iron. The stock has age softened checkering and scattered storage and handling marks, bruising and blemishes throughout. Mechanically excellent.
