Description:

The state of New Jersey altered a small amount of Model 1841 rifles around 1859 for use with an angular socket bayonet; identified by their reduced muzzle diameter with a bayonet stud mounted on the underside in combination with a removed front sight blade, intended for use with a socket bayonet with a built in sight blade. "1851" dated lock and barrel tang. "U.S./S.K/VP" marked at the breech with "N.J" and "STEEL" on the left flat. "U.S." and "42" marked buttplate tang. The patch box contains an extra nipple and combination tool. Includes a "U.S." socket bayonet. The front sling swivel is broken off, but included separately. Information on New Jersey alteration Remington Model 1841 rifles can be found on pages 169-170 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III".

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 70% arsenal refurbished brown finish on the barrel with the lock turned to a mix of smooth brown and gray patina with some patches of light pitting, and sharp markings and edges in the metal. Brass exhibits a pleasing golden aged patina. Stock is very good as arsenal sanded and re-oiled, with some scattered light to moderate dents and chips. Mechanically excellent.
