A tag on the rifle lists it as an "unsigned wheel-lock sleigh rifle c. 1650. N. European" and "Made to carry in a sleigh or carriage for protection from animals or others." It was assembled and decorated in the Victorian era using some original components, including the lock assembly. The short barrel has nine-groove rifling, a blade front sight, notch rear sight, a brass vent liner, and a sighting groove along the breech section and tang. The lock is unmarked and has an external wheel and some light engraving. The rifle is fitted with adjustable double set triggers and an extended finger groove guard. The stock has engraved staghorn inlays and a sliding patchbox. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr

Rating Definition:

Good with mottled gray and brown patina on the lock and barrel, some mild pitting, and general mild overall wear. The stock is also good and has a coat of varnish, moderate scrapes and dings, mostly distinct designs on the inlays, and some minor cracks. The lock has not been tested.
