Description:

Established during World War II, the legendary Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) performed non-combat aviation roles in support of the war effort, ferrying aircraft, test-flying repaired planes, and towing targets for aerial gunnery practice. WASPs handled about half of the U.S. Army's ferrying duties during the war and were called upon to fly the majority of the planes in America's inventory. Offered here are three WASP uniforms. 1) Service dress coat and skirt, both with a label for Helen B. Porter. Coat has the WASP pilot badge used from 1943-1947 and officer and U.S. lapel insignia. 2) Service dress coat and skirt, both with a label for Sidney Miller. Coat has early WASP pilot badge used from 1941-1943, officer and WASP lapel insignia, and USAAF patch on left sleeve. 3) Ike jacket with Helen B. Porter label, trousers and shirt hand marked with the initials “SM” on the inside of collar and USAAF patch on left sleeve. The jacket has the WASP pilot badge used from 1943-1947, U.S. and WASP lapel insignia, WASP gremlin “Fifinella” pin back mascot on left pocket, and Air Transport Command pin insignia on both shoulders. Helen B. Porter (1919-1989) was a graduate of WASP Class 43-W-5 and Sidney Miller (1911-1977) was a graduate of WASP Class 43-W-1. Provenance: The Putnam Green/Sycamore Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good overall with limited insect damage and some wear. A great set of uniforms and insignias from the “forgotten air force.”
