Description:

This early production Remington No. 1 Rolling Block sporting shotgun, bearing serial number 6, was factory made and embellished circa 1866-1867; likely for a very important high ranking individual of the Ottoman Empire (modern day Turkey) that E. Remington & Sons wanted to impress in order to gain sales of Rolling Block rifles for potential military use. Although the recipient of this Rolling Block shotgun is unconfirmed at the time of writing, judging by the gold-inlaid Ottoman symbols and high level of detail it possesses, it is possible that it may have been presented to Abdulaziz (February 8th, 1830-June 4th, 1876), the 32nd sultan of the Ottoman Empire who reigned from June 25th, 1861 through May 30th, 1876, during the time this shotgun would have been made. During the post-Civil War era, E. Remington & Sons had outside salesmen in Europe including in person appearances by Samuel Remington himself to perform demonstrations to officials of all different countries, pushing for sales of the Rolling Block platform during a time of unrest between the European powers. These efforts paid off, and the Rolling Block platform would be used in quantity all across the world by a variety of countries. This attractive embellished Rolling Block shotgun features gold line detailing at the breech and muzzle, "E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION NEW-YORK. U.S.A." gold-inlaid on top of the raised rib with elaborate gold line bordering, with gold-inlaid armorials on both sides of the frame, each a different pattern and consisting of crossed cannons, kilij and pennants surrounding the Ottoman star and crescent, the top with a gold-inlaid Ottoman armorial, with further gold line detailing along the edges of the frame, "REMINGTON" in gold in a scrolling banner on the right of the frame, the top strap engraved "PATENT", bolstered fore-end with gold line detailing to the iron end cap. Matching serial number "6" marked on the front face of the frame, underside of the barrel, on the forend wedge, right of the breech block and left of the hammer block. Belgian black powder proof markings on the left of the barrel and breech block. Black powder blank reproved bold Damascus barrel marked for 16 gauge 2 1/2 inch shells on the underside. The buttstock has a 14 1/8 inch length of pull and a steel buttplate with gold-inlaid border accents at the top and a twin cartridge trap. Total weight of 6 lbs. 7oz.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains most of an old professional refurbished brown twist finish on the barrel, with applied brown finish on the casehardened frame, attractive gold inlays, and a few small patches of light pitting. Wood is very fine with attractive grains, a repaired and spliced section on the left rear of the forend, a few discreetly filled in small cracks behind the upper and lower tangs, and defined edges overall. Mechanically excellent. This historically significant early Ottoman presentation gold inlaid Rolling Block shotgun, serial number 6, would be a prized centerpiece in any antique firearms collection!
