Description:

This mid-19th century rifle is signed "P. LIPPOLD IN STETTIN" in gold on the top of the Damascus barrel within a silver inlaid border. Stettin is the German name for Szxzecin in present day Poland, then part of the Province of Pomerania in Prussia. The breech has a nicely sculpted bolster, silver band, and engraving that continues on the standing breech which also has some silver floral motifs. The back action lock has a hammer stall safety, scroll engraving, and silver inlaid deer. The furniture is German silver and features scroll and game animal engraving patterns. The stock has relief carved scrollwork bordering the checkering on the forend and wrist and raised relief carving of a scene with a stag and hind behind the cheekpiece.

Rating Definition:

Very good with distinct Damascus patterns along the barrel, gray patina on the lock and barrel, crisp engraving, aged patina on the silver and German silver, and mild overall wear. The stock is also very good and has a removed forend cap, crisp checkering, a stabilized crack in the wrist, attractive figure and grain on the butt, and stunning raised relief carving. The forward wedge is absent. Mechanically fine.
