Originally manufactured in 1884, this Winchester Model 1873 lever action saddle ring carbine subsequently received a fantastic exhibition grade deep relief panel scene engraving by renowned Master Engraver Richard Roy. Richard Roy has been engraving firearms since 1967 and is a multimedia artist with noted renderings in sculpture, engravings and oil paintings. Roy's masterpiece offered here certainly stays true to his exceptional craftsmanship that has attracted worldwide attention. The receiver features full coverage relief floral scrollwork on a stippled background. Among the scrollwork on the front sides of the receiver are two blank inscription banners. Deep relief panel scenes are engraved on each sideplate: the left side plate depicts a cowboy on horseback roping steer and the right side plate depicts a buck in a forest. The scrollwork extends to the dust cover, cartridge elevator which is inscribed "44 CAL", both barrel bands, hammer, lever, and buttplate. Again, the scrollwork is profuse, covering nearly all of the surfaces to these components. "MODEL 1873" is laid in gold on the upper tang. The sides of the hammer are outlined in gold inlay. The barrel has a wedge of engraving accented with a gold inlaid band at the breech and a flourish of gold inlay at the muzzle. The lower tang is signed "ENG. BY/RICHARD ROY." The carbine features carbine sights, a saddle ring, the remarked two-line Winchester address/King's patent barrel legend, and forearm and straight grip stock of select burl walnut featuring high relief carved scrollwork. Very fine overall as embellished by renowned Master Engraver Richard Roy. The barrel and magazine tube retain much of the blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces have an attractive bright appearance. The engraving is crisp. The wood has a few minor handling marks and crisp carving. Mechanically excellent. As a Richard Roy masterpiece, this exceptionally well-executed modern exhibition grade Winchester Model 1873 carbine will make a grand statement in any lever action or firearms art collection no matter how advanced.
