Description:

This impressive Colt Model 1851 Navy was manufactured in 1857 and is designed to be used as a handgun or as a short repeating carbine with the included shoulder stock attached. The U.S. military also experimented with similar designs with the Springfield Model 1855 Pistol-Carbines, and earlier repeating pistols like the Volcanic also had the option of detachable stocks. To enable its use as a carbine, the recoil shield is cut, the heel has an indent, and the sides of the frame have added screws with long heads to help secure the stock. The revolver has a dovetailed blade front sight as found on early four screw frame variations (serial number range 67000-79000), a hammer notch rear sight, and a swivel mounted on the trigger guard. The barrel and cylinder are blue, the iron grip straps are silver plated, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. The barrel also has the "-ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.-" marking. The "four-screw" frame has the "COLTS/PATENT" marking. There are some small single letter inspection markings on several components, and the various components have the matching serial number. The shoulder stock is numbered to the revolver just ahead of the front sling swivel and on the heel of the buttplate and has silver plated brass furniture and a "piano" varnish finish on the walnut. The revolver and stock come in a fitted oak case with green baize lining, a loading and cleaning directions label inside the lid, cleaning rod, dual cavity mold, bag shaped James Dixon & Sons "COLTS NAVY FLASK," Eley Bros. cap tin, cartridge pack, L-shaped combination tool, and oiler. Provenance: The Norm Vegely Collection

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The vivid original case colors on this revolver are phenomenal and 95% remain. The grip frame also retains 95% of the original silver plating which now displays an attractive aged untouched patina. The barrel retains 80% plus of the original blue finish while the cylinder exhibits a smooth gray patina and distinct roll-scene and also has mostly complete safety pins. The grip has rub wear at the top from mounting the shoulder stock but otherwise has the vast majority of the original glossy finish and is very fine with only minor age and storage related wear. The shoulder stock is likewise very fine with nearly all of the original age darkened silver plating remaining, nice figure in the wood, nearly all of the finish remaining on the excellent wood, and light storage marks. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very fine with mostly minor age and storage related wear. The excellent flask is particularly nice and has nearly all of the finish and only light dings and storage marks. This is a very scarce and highly desirable Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver with matching shoulder stock, case, and accessories. The whole set is in impressive condition and will certainly make a statement in any Colt collection.
