Description:

There were two Peter Berry's active in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, during the "Golden Age" of American longrifles. Examples can be seen in "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age" by Kindig. The elder died in 1795, and the younger was still active in the early 19th century. This rifle is a contemporary copy, likely based in part on the rifle on page 274 of Kindig's book. The rifled, part-octagon, two-stage barrel has light engraving on the muzzle, traditional blade and notch sights, "PB" inscribed on top, and a "*" marked on the upper left at the breech. The patchbox has a rubbed of inscription that includes the has "Town Mayor' in the upper line. The sideplate is marked "1802." The stock has detailed molding and relief carving. The cheekpiece has a brass man-in-the-moon inlay and attractive incised and relief scroll carving and a checkered panel. The patchbox does not have a release button.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with an attractive antiqued brown and mild pitting on the lock and barrel, mild aged patina on the brass, and general mild wear. The stock is also fine and has some cracks at the breech, additional faint hairline cracks, crisp carving, and generally minor wear. Mechanically excellent.
