Description:

Manufactured in 1913, the second year of production for the U.S. contract Colt Model 1911 pistol. It is listed on p. 515 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols: 1894-1920" by Meadows as being included in a 1000 gun shipment to San Antonio Arsenal on 30 August 1913. The pistol was subsequently returned to Colt for refinish and the U.S. markings were removed at that time. The serial number is marked on the right of the frame above the trigger guard and the left side is unmarked. The slide has the two-line, two-block patent dates and address on the left with the Rampant Colt behind the slide serrations and the model and army nomenclature on the right. The later replacement barrel has National Match markings on the chamber hood, with "M P" on the left of the lug and "MA" on the right. It is fitted with a National Match marked barrel bushing. The recoil spring plunger has a rubber bushing. It has blade front and flat-top notch rear sights, which were beginning to appear at the end of 1913. It is fitted with a long smooth trigger, checkered slide release and thumb safety, short grip safety, wide checkered hammer, and a smooth straight mainspring housing with a lanyard loop on the base. The grips are diamond pattern checkered, and the magazine is full blue with a lanyard loop on the base. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration (grips not listed) as well as the shipping information above. Includes a "BOYT/42" marked leather holster, Mills canvas magazine pouch, factory sealed package of .45 ACP cartridges, original manual, and a U.S. Navy Mk. 1 knife with scabbard. This pistol was part of the collection of Toby Jason Chandler (July 31st, 1934-May 25th, 2022). Toby originally graduated from the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, became commissioned as a Lieutenant of Field Artillery, was reassigned as Captain of Military Intelligence, and then began a 22-year distinguished career as a U.S. Secret Service Agent from 1959-1981. At 26 years old, he became the youngest agent assigned to the elite team directly protecting The White House. Between 1959-1965 he was assigned to the personal details of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, President John F. Kennedy, and President Lyndon B. Johnson. Provenance: The Toby Jason Chandler Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 80% of the 1920s era, factory refinished blue finish with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina. The modern replacement grips are also very fine with only the slightest handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The holster, magazine pouch, and knife are all very good with some mild wear.
