The part octagon barrel features a matted wedding ring band at the muzzle and a band of zig-zag engraving followed by a gold inlaid band at the breech with a light spray of floral scroll on the top barrel flat. The barrel is equipped with a globe spirit gauge front sight and no provisions for a rear sight and is marked "AXTELL RIFLE CO." in script ahead of "MODEL 1877/Sheridan, Montana" and "Calibre 2 4/10" on the top flat. The frame, lock, and hammer feature a matching zig-zag and light floral scroll motifs with a relief engraved bison bust on the right and "RRS" intertwining monogram on the left. The tangs and lever feature some more extensive floral scroll patterns. The work is unsigned, but was clearly done by the hand of a master. A tang peep sight base is affixed to the upper tang (ladder and peep absent). The rifle is mounted with a wonderfully figured multipoint checkered walnut Schnabel tip forend and pistol grip stock with ebony pistol grip inlay and Axtell Rifle Co. buttplate.

Very fine, retaining 99% original blue finish and 97% case colors with a couple minor handling marks, some spotting on the lock, and crisp engraving. The wood is excellent with a couple minor dings and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
