Description:

This unique set of Savage items is pictured and described on p. 243 of "Savage Pistols" by Bailey Brower, Jr. The set is made up of a Savage Model 99 takedown rifle, a Model 1907 pistol, and a Savage marked knife all in a branded hardwood case. The previously mentioned book describes it as a gift set and claims that the grouping was assembled at the factory as a mock-up, likely for internal use only. Sets like this one never made it to standard production, making this example incredibly unique, if not one-of-a-kind. An included letter from Bailey Brower, Jr. details the contents of the set and that he acquired it from Mike Carney, who was a prominent gun dealer in the Syracuse/Utica, New York area. He states that Carney had access to the Savage Research and Development storeroom and when Savage decided to sell off much of the storerooms contents, he bought many of the interesting items, including this set, directly from the company. Also included is a Roe Clark letter discussing the two firearms in the set, confirming the configuration of both, and stating that the Model 1907 pistol originally shipped to Marshall-Wells Hardware Co. on 28 December 1910, while the rifle originally shipped to Shapleigh Hardware Co. on 8 April 1915, and then reshipped to Simmons Hardware Co. on 24 May 1915. The information in this letter indicates that the two firearms were likely sold as standard production and later returned to the factory until being combined into this set as a proof of concept. The set itself is housed in a long hardwood case with the Savage logo/trademark stenciled on the lid along with "1915 SAFARI LIMITED EDITION". The interior of the case is lined with royal blue felt and fitted for all the components of the set. There is a small Savage logo label inside the lid, along with a larger information logo detailing the contents of the set and listing the two firearms by serial number. There are also cartridge blocks for both guns fitted inside. There is a Savage marked knife with a leather sheath stamped with the Savage logo and a matching leather holster for the pistol, stamped with the matching logo. There is a Savage branded compass fitted into the corner of the cartridge block for the rifle. The rifle has standard markings and is fitted with pinned blade front and Marble's notch rear sights. The stock is of a non-standard configuration with a carved cheek piece on the left and a checkered Bishop buttplate, and was likely specially made for this limited edition set. The pistol has standard markings and features.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains most of the refinished blue finish, a few scattered areas of very light surface freckling visible under the finish, and a few scattered light handling marks. The lightly sanded and revarnished, replacement wood is also very good with some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The knife is very fine with minimal wear and some light verdigris. The case is fine with some mild wear and fading.

B) Savage Model 1907 Semi-Automatic Pistol

Manufacturer: Savage Arms Corporation
Model: 1907
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 32 ACP
Barrel: 3 3/4 inch round
Finish: blue
Grip: hard rubber

Catalog Page: 363
Class: Curio & Relic Handgun
Description:

See "A". Provenance: The Bailey Brower, Jr. Collection, author of “Savage Pistols”

Rating Definition:

Good, retains strong traces of the original blue finish in sheltered areas with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and a few patches of very light surface pitting. The grips are also good with some light handling marks, hairline crack in the right panel, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
