Documented Rufus Perkins New England Militia Flintlock Musket - NSN, 78 cal., 41 1/4 inch round bbl., brown finish, walnut stock. New England Militia flintlock musket assembled by Rufus Perkins of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, who was known to have a large stock of leftover musket parts and components from his previous 1808 U.S. contract. Rufus Perkins’ flintlock muskets are described on pages 230-232 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II”, with this exact musket photographed on page 231. The book states, “It is speculated that Perkins used the locks, barrels and other component parts he had on hand to fabricate muskets that he sold privately to individual members of the militia or militia companies.”These New England militia muskets feature pin-fastened barrels, mostly plain brass British style furniture with a slightly curved buttplate, and side screw escutcheons of classic New England configuration. The rear of the lock is marked “RP” and a vertical arched “BRIDGWATER” (misspelled), with an eagle at center above an oval “US”. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. CONDITION: Very good with mottled brown patina overall with mild flash pitting. Stock is also very good with scattered scratches, cracks on either side of the forestock and ahead of the lock, a chip on the right below the barrel, and a crack running the left lower edge of the buttstock. Scarce Documented Regimental Marked 1797 State of Pennsylvania Contract Evans Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 44 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Styled directly after the French Model 1763 Charleville pattern, this is one of 20,000 muskets made by approximately 18 makers for Pennsylvania state militia issue, authorized by the Legislative Act of 1797. This particular musket was manufactured under Edward, James,
and Owen Evans 1801 contract with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This exact Pennsylvania contract Evans musket is photographed and described on page 253 and 254 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II”. “EVANS/CP” marked at the rear of the lock, the “CP” denoting ownership by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All fittings are iron including the ramrod which has a trumpet style head. Bayonet lug on top of the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivel beneath the middle barrel band and ahead of the trigger guard. “28th Regt” above what appears to be a double stamped “6” ahead of “No 23” marked in large letters in the left of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes U.S. inspected leather sling. CONDITION: Good with dark brown patina overall with scattered light to mild pitting. Middle band retainer has a broken tip. Stock is also good with scattered light handling marks and dents cracks, two holes in the left flat, and a chip behind the barrel tang. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500 LOT 162 Fine Documented New England Militia Style Flintlock Musketoon - NSN, 69 cal., 25 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This short flintlock long gun is pictured and discussed on page 329 of “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II: From the 1790s to the End of the Flintlock Period” by George Moller. In the book he lists it as a Type II Militia Musketoon, and his collection notes referred to it as a “New England Militia Horsemans Carbine circa 1830s.” He notes that this “musketoon is attributed to private procurement for use by a member of an unknown state’s militia cavalry” and is similar to others that he has placed in this category. It has brass furniture including two pinned barrel bands and a New England style lock screw plate, a brass trigger, an integral blade front sight on the front barrel band, an imported lock with scroll engraving and “WILKES” marking, a “P” on the left at the breech, and a simple sling ring on the bottom of the butt. CONDITION: Fine with attractively aged patina on the brass furniture, mostly gray patina on the barrel as well as patches of dark pitting, a reworked replacement lock with mostly silver-gray patina, and general mild wear. The stock is also fine and has some general scrapes and dings, minor flakes, and dark oiled finish. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,500 LOT 163 Scarce Documented 1797 State of Pennsylvania Contract John Miles Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 43 7/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Styled directly after the French Model 1763 Charleville pattern, this is one of 20,000 muskets made by approximately 18 makers for Pennsylvania state militia issue, authorized by the Legislative Act of 1797. This particular musket is one of the 4,000 manufactured by John Miles of North Liberties, Philadelphia (two contracts of 2,000 each, 1798 and 1801). This exact John Miles, Sr. Pennsylvania contract musket is photographed and described on page 257 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II”. “MILES/CP” marked at the rear of the lock, the “CP” denoting ownership by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All fittings are iron including the ramrod which has a trumpet style head. Bayonet lug on top of the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivel beneath the middle barrel band and ahead of the trigger guard. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes reproduction leather sling and wood tampion. CONDITION: Good with dark brown patina with scattered moderate pitting overall. Middle band retainer has a broken tip.
