No Colt Collection is Complete without a Paterson Revolver
   Samuel Colt
 John Coffee Hays
The barrel, cylinder recoil shields and grip straps are blued, the frame and hammer are color casehardened and the walnut grip is varnished. The large frame, .36 caliber Paterson Holster Model Revolver No. 5 was the most practical of all the Colt Paterson revolvers. Jack Hays and the Texas Rangers demonstrated that the No. 5 Paterson Revolver was a formidable weapon for mounted troops and established the reputation of the Colt “Texas Paterson” revolver on the frontier. The revolver is accompanied by a 1999 letter from Herb Glass Jr., that includes a copy of a 1953 “GUN REPORT” article by noted Colt collector John S. Du Mont that shows this revolver as well as a 1970 bill of sale from Jackson Arms.
CONDITION: Fine. The barrel retains 50% of the original high polish blue finish with moderate edge wear and scattered handling marks on the sides. The barrel edges are sharp and the legend on the top flat
is crisp. The cylinder has 60% of the original blue finish and retains nearly all of the original roll- engraved holdup scene. The recoil shields have 40% of the original blue finish remaining. The grip straps have a smooth silver-gray patina. The case colors on the frame and hammer have faded to
a mottled silver gray. The flared walnut grip is in fine condition and retains 50% of the original finish with some extensive scattered flaking. The rear face of the cylinder and percussion nipples show minimal flash pitting. The serial numbers on the butt and wedge are sharp. The action is crisp and functions well. This is a fine example of a rare and very desirable Colt
Texas Paterson revolver.
Provenance: John S. du Mont, Jackson Arms, Herb Glass Jr.
