Matched Pair of Engraved John Dickson & Son Best Round Body Action
Double Barrel Ejector Shotguns with Case
-A) John Dickson & Son Round Body Action Shotgun - Serial no. 6669, 12 gauge, 29 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, walnut
stock. Both manufactured prior to 1925. Both guns have blued steel
  chopper lump barrels with single brass bead front sight on the smooth, concave solid rib which is marked “JOHN DICKSON & SON, PRINCES STREET, EDINBURGH” and a gold inlaid “1” (“2” on the “B” gun) near the breech, single bands at either breech with two flourishes of floral scroll at the rear of the rib, London nitro proofs, and 2 1/2 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The casehardened John Dickson & Son round body boxlock actions display beautiful floral scroll engraving with “JOHN DICKSON & SON” banners on either side and gold inlaid “1” (“2” on the “B” gun)
on the barrel release lever. The guns feature double triggers and tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid “SAFE”. Gorgeous, highly figured, multi- point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings including the Anson button release with is marked with a gold inlaid “1” (“2” on the “B” gun) and straight grip stock with blank gold initial oval and checkered horn grip buttplate. Both
of the serial numbers are noted in Donald Dallas’“John Dickson & Son:
The Round Action Gunmaker,” but no details on the guns are recorded.
Includes a leather bound takedown case with “HON. J. G. STUART” marked
on the lid and John Dickson & Son trade label inside that houses both “A”
and “B”, cleaning rod, and nickel oiler. The Honorable James Gray Stuart,
1st Viscount Stuart of Findhorn, was a British nobleman and politician
holding many offices from 1923-1959. Barrel and stock measurements
(R/L): bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both proved at “12” (.729
inches) and measured at .733/.734 inches; choke constriction .008/.024
inches; minimum wall thickness .024/.022 inches; 1 3/8 inch drop at
comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 14 15/16 inch length of pull;
cast-off; weight 6 lbs 8 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as professionally upgraded to a matched pair, retaining 99% blue and casehardened finishes with minor handling evidence. There is a repaired crack near the end of the lower tang; otherwise, the wood is very fine with
minor scratches and crisp checkering. The case is good with moderate
storage wear. Mechanically excellent. B) John Dickson & Son Round
Body Action Shotgun - Serial no. 6842, 12 gauge, 28 7/8 inch solid rib
bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. As described in “A”. Barrel
and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter 9 inches from the breech
measured at .734/.736 inches (proof indistinct): choke constriction
.005/.024 inches; minimum wall thickness .021/.022 inches; 1 5/16 inch
drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 15 inch length of pull;
cast-off; weight 6 lbs 8 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as professionally upgraded to a matched pair,
retaining 99% blue and casehardened finishes with minor handling
evidence and a single pit under the surface on the left barrel. The wood is
very fine with minor scratches and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 18,000 - 27,500
