Purdey & Sons Bar- In-Wood Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun with Extra Barrel Set and Case - Serial no. 10730, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., brown/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1880 per page 193 of Donald Dallas’“Purdey Gun & Rifle Makers: The Definitive History”. Brown Damascus steel barrels with single bead front sight on the smooth, concave solid rib which is marked “J. PURDEY & SONS, 314 1/2, OXFORD STREET, LONDON” along with a patch of floral scroll at the breech end, 2 3/4 inch chambers with single extractor, and correct period London

  wood action and hammer sidelocks display beautiful classic English rose and scroll engraving with “J. PURDEY & SONS” marked on either lock plate. The gun features sideclips, lightly carved fences, and double triggers. Highly figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings including the
Anson button release and straight grip stock with teardrop carved flats, inscription oval marked “B”, and a non-factory red rubber recoil pad. A similar example is pictured as plate 45 in Dallas’ aforementioned book. Per the consignor, this shotgun is from the collection of Robert Braden co-author of “Lock, Stock and Barrel: Making an English Shotgun and Shooting with Consistency”. Included with the gun is an added set of Purdey barrels which have been numbered to the gun and measure
30 inches with a concave solid rib marked “J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON. MADE TO ORDER FOR GEO. C. PARK JANUARY. 1883” as well as a leather bound takedown case that houses the whole set with gun information sheet on the interior lid. Barrel measurement for extra set (R/L): bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both proved at “12” (.729 inches) and measured at .739/.738 inches; choke constriction .008/.020 inches; minimum wall thickness .018/.022 inches. Barrel and stock measurements for the primary set (R/L): bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both proved at “12” (.729 inches) and measured at .748/.747 inches; choke constriction .036/.035 inches; minimum wall thickness .022/.022 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 2 9/16 inch drop at heel; 14 7/8 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs 3 oz. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 90% original brown finish with strong Damascus pattern, 40% case colors, 60% blue on the trigger guard, and mild handling evidence. The reoiled wood is very good with some scratching on the stock, tiny cracks at the back of either lock plate and off the trigger guard finial, and crisp checkering. The case and extra barrels are very good. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 6,500 - 9,500

Fine Engraved Cased of Pair Charles Lancaster 12 Bore Double Barrel Single Trigger Assisted-Opening Sidelock Ejector Shotguns -A) Charles Lancaster Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 7714, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., brown/bright/blue finish, walnut stock. The maker’s records confirm that this pair of shotguns were completed in 1890 and sold to a A.C. Gosling. Known as “Wristbreakers”, this action incorporates Frederick Beesley’s 1884 patents (nos. 425 and 14488), the rights to which had been purchased by H.A.A. Thorn, Lancaster’s then owner. With browned fine Damascus barrels with concave rib signed “CHARLES LANCASTER. 151. NEW BOND ST. LONDON. PATENT EJECTOR” and with bead front sight, the breech end of the rib engraved with scrollwork and with silver inlaid “1”. Bright action signed “CHARLES LANCASTER/LONDON” on each side and with blued firing pin bushings, blued toplever numbered “1” in silver, automatic safety with silver inlaid “SAFE”, blued cover plate engraved “SINGLE TRIGGER/PATENT” and blued trigger guard. Bright back action sidelocks each signed “CHARLES LANCASTER/PATENT”. Border and scroll engraved throughout. Well figured 14 5/8 inch semi-pistol grip stock including 7/8 inch extension, and with checkered grip and forearm, the latter with blued lever release numbered “1” in silver. Birmingham nitro reproof marks dated 1974. Barrel measurements (R/L): reproved at .729/.729, measuring .732/.731, 2 1/2 inch chambers, minimum wall thickness 0.025/0.025. Weight 6 lbs. 14 oz. CONDITION: Very good as professionally refurbished, with 95% of the brown finish remaining with strong pattern and some spotting. The action is brushed bright with crisp engraving and blued toplever, screws, trigger plate, and trigger guard. The wood is very good with minor scattered handling marks. Single trigger does not reset for the second shot, otherwise mechanically fine. B) Charles Lancaster Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 7715, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., brown/ bright/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A”. The rib, toplever and forearm release lever each numbered “2” in silver. Birmingham nitro reproof marks dated 1974. Barrel measurements (R/L): reproved at .729/.729, measuring .733/.731, 2 1/2 inch chambers, minimum wall thickness 0.025/0.029. Weight 6 lbs. 14 oz. In Rey Pavon oak lined leather fitted double gun case lined in burgundy baize, with some accessories including snap caps and with canvas and leather outer. CONDITION: Very good as professionally refurbished, with 95% of the brown finish remaining with strong pattern and some spotting. The action is brushed bright with crisp engraving and blued toplever, screws, triggerplate, and triggerguard. The wood is very good with minor scattered handling marks and a small hairline crack on the forend shoe. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection. Estimate: 7,000 - 11,000
