   LOT 1601
Excellent Mauser Technische Studenten Verbindung Marked Single Shot Bolt Action “Wehrmannsgewehr” Serviceman’s Target Rifle - Serial no. 20853, 8.15 mmx46 R cal., 29 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Patterned as closely as possible after the Gewehr 98 military rifle, the “Wehrmannsgewehr” was intended for civilian or paramilitary target practice, using the commercial 8.15x46 cartridge instead of the 7.92x57, which was restricted post-WWI. This specific rifle was presented to or used by a college fraternity type organization called a Technische Studenten Verbindung, which were known for their particularly radical and patriotic political views when it came to the Third Reich. This affiliation is evidenced in various ways including the “eagle/swastika” and “T. ST. V” (“Technische Studenten Verbindung”) on top of the receiver ring along with the serial number, as well as with what appears to be a club sticker on the bottom of the butt marked with some illegible writing, “eagle/swastika”, and is dated 1944. The left of the barrel at the breech has the serial number and caliber marking, and the left of the receiver has “crown/letter” proofs, and the Mauser Oberndorf address. The Mauser banner is marked on the top rear of the receiver. Various small parts show the partial serial number. Fitted with blade and elevation adjustable Haenel style rear sights and mounted with a nicely figured pistol grip stock with a serrated buttplate. CONDITION: Very fine, retains 95% plus of the original blue finish with some light edge wear and a few scattered small patches of rough oxidation. The nicely figured wood is very good with some scattered
minor dings and scratches, a duffel cut under the middle barrel band, and a thin coating of varnish, including over the sticker. Mechanically excellent.

Very Fine Einwohnerwehr Marked 1908 Dated Mauser GEW. 98 Bolt Action Rifle - Serial no. 88734, 8.15 mmx46 R cal., 29 inch round bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut stock. This is an exceptional example of a pre-World War I Mauser GEW. 98 that was later reworked after the war to be in compliance with the Treaty of Versailles. These rifles are often referred to as “Wehrmannsgewehr” or “serviceman’s rifles” and were very commonly produced in single shot variations and chambered in 8.15x46R to be used by various shooting clubs as target rifles. This particular rifle, though it is not single shot, may have initially been produced for that purpose but was later “issued” to the Einwohnerwehr, a far right anti-communist militia based out of Bavaria, which
was loosely associated with the Freikorps. The top of the receiver ring has standard Mauser markings and is dated 1908. The left of the receiver has “GEW 98.”, “crown/B” and “crown/U” proofs, and the serial number which is repeated on the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked “BLG./Sch.H.” denoting the non-military caliber. Fitted with blade and elevation adjustable notch sight graduated 4-20. The partial serial number is visible on various small parts including the bolt. Mounted with a smooth pistol grip stock with an ornate monogram style stamp on the right along with the
Einwohnerwehr “EWB” brand. There are traces of four stickers on the bottom of the buttstock that appear to be associated with various shooting clubs or competitions CONDITION: Very fine as likely factory assembled, retains 90% plus of the blue finish and the remainder mostly bright with some scattered light edge wear and handling marks. The wood is also very fine with some scattered minor dings and scratches, and crisp cartouches/brands. Mechanically excellent.
