Manufactured in 1893. The accompanying factory letter lists this special order Model 1886 rifle with a half octagon, extra heavy barrel in .45-70 caliber, set trigger, plain pistol grip stock
with 14 1/2 inch length of pull, Lyman sights and half magazine. The half magazine,
half octagon/half round extra heavy barrel, set trigger and pistol grip stock are special order features. Per
Winchester expert George Madis, “Single set triggers were offered until 1895 when double set triggers supplanted the older style” (“The Winchester Book,” page 317). The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front
sight, elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight and tang peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and “45-70.” The lower tang has the patent date and serial number. The pistol grip stock is fitted with a crescent buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is
marked “1 CF.” The assembly number “1” is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate.
CONDITION: Fine. The barrel retains 70% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 80% original blue finish remains on the bolt. Traces of original niter blue
remain on the loading gate. 30% original case colors remain on the hammer, lever and frame. The cracked buttstock is good with pistol grip insert and sling swivel absent. The forearm
is good with a few filled repairs and minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000
LOT 3019 Scarce Special Order Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action .44 W.C.F. Short Rifle - Serial no. 700997, 44 WCF cal., 20 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1913. This is a highly desirable short rifle variation of the Model 1892 with a 20 inch octagon barrel and correct 8 3/8 inch forearm. These short rifles are scarce as most purchasers of short barreled Model 1892s preferred carbines. British proofs are stamped on the upper right barrel flat and right side of the receiver. Dovetail blade with white paint and elevation adjustable rear sight on a barrel with the two-line address/patent dates marking and “44 WCF” on the upper left flat. Three-line model/trade mark information on the upper tang. Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. CONDITION: Fine. The barrel and magazine retain 70% original blue finish and traces of original blue on the receiver in the protected areas (strongest on the lower tang) with the balance a smooth dark brown patina. The wood is also fine with a divot on the forearm (right side) and a number of minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
