Very Fine Engraved W.W. Greener 8 Bore
Double Barrel Toplever Hammer Duck Gun -
Serial no. 19274, 8 gauge, 36 inch bbl., brown/casehardened/
blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in circa 1878. With browned
Damascus barrels each engraved with a band of stylized running foliage at the
breech end. Broad concave rib with bead front sight, signed “W.W. GREENER. ST. MARY’S WORKS BIRMINGHAM. WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS. 1875,
1877 & 1878”, and
signed at the breech end “PATENT TREBLE WEDGE FAST NO. 3048” towards the scroll engraved rib extension. Casehardened action with Greener patent cross bolt, carved percussion fences and blued toplever.
Casehardened rebounding sidelocks each signed “W.W. GREENER” and with sculpted hammer. Blued trigger guard and steel butt plate with central
stippled panel for additional grip. Fine border and scroll engraving throughout. The
underside of the barrels and water table with Birmingham “Not For Ball” black powder proof marks, the water table
also with Greener “Elephant” trademarks and marked “W.W. GREENER PATENT”. Well figured 14 1/4 inch semi-pistol
grip stock with carved arrow shaped drop points, shaped checkered panels to the grip and forearm, and blank silver oval initial escutcheon beneath the butt. The
forearm with Anson push button release. Weight 14 lbs. 10 oz.
CONDITION: The enormous wildfowling gun remains in exceptionally fine original condition, especially given it’s more than 120 years old. The barrels retain more
than 90% original browned finish with some age related storage marks and handling wear. The action retains 70% original casehardened finish, some areas faded
with stronger colors in sheltered areas, and the toplever retains 90% original blued finish. The locks retain 97% strong original casehardened finish. Engraving is crisp
throughout. The trigger guard shows more handling wear with traces of finish remaining and slight softening to the engraving. The butt plate is a light grey patina with a patch of discoloration. Stock has an attractive figure with scattered age related storage and handling marks, bruises and small dents throughout. Checkering remains sharp. Mechanically excellent.

action with carved percussion fences, and backaction rebounding locks each signed
“W.W. GREENER” and with blued hammer. Blued underlever and trigger guard,
the latter engraved with the serial number across the bow and with checkered tang. The
underside of the barrels and water table with Birmingham nitro proof marks and Greener “Elephant” trademarks.
Figured semi-pistol grip stock including rubber recoil pad, with checkered grip and forearm, the latter with blued checkered Deeley &
Edge fastener and large green horn tip. The underside of the butt with silver oval initial escutcheon engraved with a monogram. Barrel and stock measurements: chambers proved at 2 oz; bore diameter 9 inches from the breech proved at “7” (.874 inches); choke constriction .065/.066 inches; 1
3/4 inch drop at comb; 2 11/16 inch drop at heel; 14 3/8 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 16 lbs. 3 oz.
CONDITION: Steel barrels retaining near 100% reblued finish, signature softened. Action a light grey patina with slight traces of original faded casehardened finish, the locks each with traces of casehardened finish behind hammers. Hammers and underlever each retaining near 100% reblued finish. Stock with handling marks, some deep, well defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
