British Tower Marked India Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 75 cal., 39 5/16 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Also known as the Third Model, the India Pattern Brown Bess was used by both the British military and the East India Company in the late 18th century to mid- 19th century. The lock is marked “TOWER” at the tail with a standard “crown/GR” Georgian cypher at the center. It has brass furniture
including slightly flared ramrod guides. Crown proofs marked on the breech. “IxH” carved on the left stock flat. Large letters “14:B/DIGBY:M” branded upside down on the left rear of the buttstock. “Crown/broad arrow/1805” marked on the right rear of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet marked with the East India Company heart bale and “NOCK 1801” on the socket, and a period leather sling. CONDITION: Very good with scattered moderate pitting on the otherwise bright metal surfaces with sharp markings on the lock and barrel. Brass retains an attractive bright patina. Stock is also very good as revarnished with nice figure overall, scattered light scratches, a re-glued section below the side plate, chips behind the barrel tang, carving and branding as mentioned above, and crisp markings on the right of the buttstock. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is good with scattered patches of moderate pitting, sling is also good with cracking and age related wear. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. LOT 137 British Tower Marked India Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 75 cal., 42 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Also known as the Third Model, the India Pattern Brown Bess was used by both the British military and the East India Company in the late 18th century to mid-19th century. “CN 3928” marked on top of the barrel. The lock is marked “TOWER” at the tail with a standard “crown/GR” Georgian cypher at the center, and “RW” is marked inside of the lock. It has brass furniture including slightly flared ramrod guides. A crown over “B O” above a British broad arrow acceptance mark is stamped on the left rear of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and later leather sling. CONDITION: Good with bright surfaces, scattered light pitting on the barrel, some mild flash pitting, and scattered moderate pitting on the lock with nice lock markings. Brass retains an attractive golden aged patina. Stock is also good as sanded and re-oiled with scattered light scratches and dents, a spliced replacement forend, a few mild gouges on the left of the comb, and crisp stampings on the left of the buttstock. LOT 138 Unmarked 18th Century Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 72 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright/brown finish, walnut stock. Features a bayonet stud on top, brass upper and lower barrel bands, iron middle band with sling ring, second sling ring mounted in the stud through the trigger guard finial, scroll engraved lock and brass furniture, nicely figured stock with raised flats, and “GDM” marked ahead of the toe. Includes a socket bayonet. CONDITION: Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with dark brown patina along the barrel, mild pitting at the vent, some braised repairs on the muzzle and frizzen, applied artificial brown finish on the lock, aged patina on the brass furniture, repaired cracks in the trigger guard tang, and moderate overall wear. The bayonet is fair with heavy oxidation/pitting and some chips. The stock is fine and has nice figure on the buttstock, some small chips and cracks, and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Pair of Scaleby Castle Marked British Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistols with Display Case -A) British Long Sea Service Pistol - NSN, 577 cal., 12 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The barrels of both of these pistols are inscribed “SCALEBY CASTLE” on top at the breech. Scaleby Castle is located in Scaleby in Cumbria in the north of England and was damaged during the English Civil War. The barrels also have “crown/9” markings and London proof and view marks. The second also has a “crown/B.P” mark. The locks have “crown/V” and “crown/2” markings and are signed “FEARNLEY.” Robert Fearnley is noted in “Gunmakers of London” by Blackmore as an ordnance contractor in 1805, and an “A. Fearnley” is also noted as an ordnance contractor in 1815. Belt hooks are on the left, and the other furniture is brass. The pistols have a “crown/S” marking on the left side of the wrists, and the second pistol
has an “RF” marking on the left flat. They include a custom table top style display case.
CONDITION: Fine with mostly silver-gray patina, some patches of darker brown patina, and light pitting on the lock and barrel, replacement belt hook, and attractive aged patina on the
brass furniture. The stock is also fine and has nice figure, mild dings and scratches, and minor edge wear. Mechanically fine. B) British Long Sea Service Pistol - NSN, 577 cal., 12 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Good with an artificially applied gray and brown patina visible on the lock and barrel, some light pin prick pitting, dark aged patina on the brass furniture, and mild overall wear. The stock is also fine and has some minor dings and dents, light scratches, and a thin tension crack at the breech. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500
