       LOT 1373 Engraved and Inlaid Wheellock Sporting Rifle - NSN, 54 cal., 30 1/2 inch octagon bbl., bright finish, hardwood stock. This late 17th century style rifle has blade and notch sights, some crude engraving around the rear sight, “P R” marked on top at the breech, border engraving at the breech, an internal wheel, warrior and best scene on the dog, shell design on the dog bridle, sea creature design by the wheel, “ERTTEL. SENI” signed ahead of the pan, a scene of a spotted cat looking back towards a castle/estate on the rear portion of the lock plate, adjustable double set triggers, and very ornate staghorn/bone/antique ivory and mother of pearl decorated stock. The stock inlays feature primarily a variety fo floral and bestial mask designs. The left side features a scene of a hunter aiming his rifle at a stag being pursued by his dogs along with two flushed birds.
CONDITION: Good with gray and brown patina on the barrel and lock, mild pitting, aged patina on the replacement brass trigger guard, and moderate overall wear. The stock is far and has cracks including a break in the midsection, some slivers absent from the edges, small pieces of absent or replaced inlays, some repairs, and mild overall wear. The lock is not tested. Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500

Ornate Engraved and Inlaid Wheellock Rifle with Carl Ofner Lock - NSN, 58 cal., 32 inch octagon bbl., bright finish, hardwood stock. This rifle was most likely assembled and embellished in the Victorian era, possibly by artisans working for Frederic Spitzer. The original lock is signed “CARL/OFNER” ahead of the pan. Johan Carl Ofner was active in the early 18th century. It is engraved with a scene of a mounted European knight raiding an Ottoman camp and chasing an Ottoman cavalryman. The dog includes a dog/wolf head design and another Ottoman cavalryman. The plate on the dog spring has a best igniting a cannon. The barrel has “ABRAHAM. DELLEMAIR. 16.92.” spuriously marked on top and blade and notch sights. The stock has extensive staghorn/bone inlays in a variety of classical designs and a coat of arms on the left side. CONDITION: Fair overall as assembled with gray and brown patina on the lock and barrel, distinct lock engraving, some mild pitting, replacement forend cap, some chips on the forend, repaired ramrod entry pipe, absent trigger guard, crack through the breech section of the stock, and loose barrel with absent tang screw. Scarce Desirable Grouping of Three Wheellock Accouterments -
Includes three tools/accouterments related to wheellock firearms. 1) Engraved gilded brass combination spanner/turnscrew
with flourishes of light floral scroll engraving and
lanyard swivel. 2) Bone handled spiraled steel
spanner. 3) Ray skin covered bag shaped powder flask with spring loaded lid, spanner sockets on either side near the spout, turnscrew head on the base, and a lanyard loop on the back side. CONDITION: All are very good or better with some retaining traces of the original finish, some scattered pitting and generally mild wear. Estimate: 1,500 - 2,500
