Documented U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type II Flintlock Musket Dated 1808 with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 45 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The Model 1795 Musket represents many firsts in U.S. martial arms including the first standardized and official model of musket manufactured for the U.S. military and was based on the French “Charleville” Model 1766 muskets widely used during the American Revolution. Model 1795s saw heavy use during the War of 1812. Type II Model 1795s are dated from 1806 to 1809 with this example dated “1808” on the tail of the lock and the buttplate tang. Type II Model 1795 muskets are described on pages 42-47 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II” with the trigger guard of this exact musket pictured on page 45 next to the caption, “From late 1806 to 1809 short trigger guards with oval-shaped front extensions were used in the production of Model 1795 (Type II) muskets at Springfield Armory.”This musket also has the correct Type II markings and features including a round bottom flash pan. The lock is marked with a script “US” above an eagle and shield motif above a downward curved “SPRINGFIELD” at the center. The barrel has the standard “P/eagle/V” proof marks at the left of the breech. A large “X” is carved into the left stock flat and on the right of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and period leather sling. CONDITION: Good with scattered light pitting on the barrel and mild flash pitting concentrated at the breech and on the lock and hammer. Stock is also good as sanded and re-oiled with scattered scratches and dents, a cracked/absent section on the right of the forend, slightly undersized in the ramrod channel, carvings as mentioned above, and slightly undersized at the toe. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is good with scattered moderate pitting, sling is very good with light cracking and age related wear. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Type II Flintlock Musket Dated 1805 with Bayonet -
Serial no. NSNV, 69 cal., 44 7/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This 1805 dated Harpers Ferry Model 1795 musket is likely included as part of approximately 282 manufactured by Harpers Ferry in the second half of the year 1806 due to a brief halting of production on Model 1795 muskets starting partway through the year 1804 in order to manufacture Model 1803 rifles. The lock plate of this example is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1805” vertically at the rear, with a large shield bearing eagle over “US” at the center. Faint remnants of two sunken oval proofs are on the upper left quarter at the rear of the barrel. Bayonet lug on top of the barrel towards the muzzle. Sling swivels on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet and period leather sling. CONDITION: Fair with scattered moderate pitting overall and a three inch crack visible on the right side of the middle of the barrel. Stock is also fair as sanded and re-oiled with numerous chips and absent sections along the barrel channel, a nine inch repaired and spliced section behind the middle barrel band, some chips around the lock, a crack ahead of the trigger guard finial, and slightly undersized around various edges. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is very good with some scattered patches of mild pitting, sling is also very good with cracking and age related wear. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. LOT 1145 Whitney 1798 U.S. Contract Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., brown finish, walnut stock. This musket is a Model 1798 Type II as it has a faceted brass pan. Around 1,000 of these muskets were manufactured by Whitney, circa 1802-1803. The lock is stamped with an eagle over “NEW HAVEN” in the center and “U. STATES” in a vertical arch at the rear. It has a bayonet stud on top of the barrel near the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the upper barrel band, sling swivels holding a modern leather sling and “GM” George D. Moller collection mark at the stock toe. CONDITION: Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration, retaining much of the reapplied brown finish with the action having a smooth dark patina. There is some pitting which is heavier on the buttplate. The refinished stock is good with minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Documented Smith Cogswell New York State Contract Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 41 3/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The left side of the barrel is stamped with “H.P” (H. Peck) inspection initials followed by “SNY” (State of New York) marked on the left quarter of the breech end of the barrel. “SNY/ALBANY” over “S. COGSWELL.” marked at the center of the lock plate. Smith Cogswell New York State contract muskets are described on pages 243-245 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II” with this exact musket pictured on pages 244 and 245. There are sling swivels mounted on the underside of the middle barrel band and ahead of the trigger, three barrel bands, an iron ramrod and Moller’s discreet “GDM” collection mark by the toe. Includes a period leather sling. CONDITION: Good, with the metal surfaces having a mottled brown-gray appearance and some pitting mostly concentrated at the breech. The wood is also good with a filled repair at the trigger guard, a couple stress cracks, a few absent chips and slivers, and minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
