Exceptional Documented Colt Lightning Medium Frame Saddle Ring Carbine with French Dealer Markings and Factory Letter - Serial no. 59236, 44-40 cal., 20 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is an excellent example of a Colt medium frame, saddle ring carbine manufactured in 1891. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A./ PATENTED MAY 29. SEPT. 18.83. MAY 22. 85. JUNE 15.86.

The top of the receiver at the breech is marked with the French dealer marking “LACOUTURE/F CANT/LYON” and there are Belgian proofmarks on the lower right rear of the barrel. The Rampant Colt is stamped on the left side of the receiver. Fixed front and adjustable carbine style rear sights, casehardened hammer, saddle ring, and staple mounted on the left side of the receiver and a checkered forearm and smooth straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate. The accompanying factory letter confirms the “Medium Frame” configuration, serial number, caliber “.44CLMR”, barrel length, “Blue” finish, “Wood” stocks and that it was 1 of 7 sold to Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Mfg. company, London agency, London England, address “Unavailable” on June 20, 1891.
