Thunderbolt Lever Action Single Shot Carbine - Serial no. 1509, 44 RF cal., 18 1/2 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
This Whitney-Howard hammerless single shot breech loading carbine is also known as the Howard Thunderbolt. It is estimated that less than
   2,000 Whitney-Howard rifles, carbines, and shotguns were manufactured in total between 1866-1870, with this example included as one of only less than
an estimated 200 carbines manufactured. The serial number is marked on the left side of the lever link. The left side rear of the barrel is marked “CHARLES HOWARD’S PATENTS.OF-SEPT.26.-AND-OCT.10.1865.-AND-MAY.15.1866” and the right side is marked “WHITNEY-ARMS-CO.-WHITNEYVILLE-CONN.” Features a dovetailed fixed brass blade front sight and dovetailed fixed notch rear sight, and a walnut straight grip stock with an iron crescent buttplate. According to the consignor, this is one of six known carbines extant.
CONDITION: Very good with smooth gray and brown patina overall and nice markings in the metal. Stock is good with numerous scattered scratches and dents. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.

stock. Designed by the Howard Brothers out of Detroit, Michigan and manufactured by Whitney with only some 2,000 built. The barrel is
marked “CHARLES HOWARD’S-PATENTS.OF-SEPT. 26.-AND.-OCT.10. 1865.-& OCT. 25.1862” and “MANUF’D. FOR-HOWARD-BROTHERS-BY-WHITNEY-ARMS-CO.- WHITNEYVILLE.CONN.” Straight grip stock with blued steel crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Good, showing an attractive brown patina on the metal surfaces and some scattered spotting. The wood is also good with a crack at the wrist and worn checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Brothers out of Detroit, Michigan and manufactured by Whitney. The barrel is marked “CHARLES HOWARD’S-PATENTS.OF-SEPT. 26.-AND.-OCT.10. 1865.-AND- MAY.15.1866”. Straight grip stock with blued steel crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Good, showing an even brown patina on the metal surfaces, mostly legible markings, and a numerous dings and scratches in the stock. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Milan J. Turk Collection.
