Description:

The Model 1860 was the third most produced Colt handgun of the percussion era, with more than 127,000 built to meet Union contracts during the Civil War. This particular specimen is a very early model produced in 1861. Only 4,000 were originally produced with the full fluted cylinder and these appear within the first 8,000 serial numbers. Equipped with a fixed blade front sight and notch sight in the checkered hammer. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW -YORK U.S. AMERICA --". "PATENTED SEPT 10TH 1850" has been stamped in one of the cylinder flutes, "GG" in another and "COLTS / PATENT" on the left side of the frame. "L" is stamped on the left side rear of the trigger guard. The loading lever runs almost the full length of the barrel. Finish on the Model 1860 was three toned, with a blued barrel, cylinder and backstrap, casehardened frame, hammer and lever, and silver plated brass trigger guard. Smooth walnut grips. All of the serial numbers match. The recoil shield and backstrap are cut for a shoulder stock. Number restamped on the backstrap. Some scattered minor pitting.
