Description:

Produced around the late 1830s-early 1840s, the Sheffield Works bowies were produced by James English and Henry Huber, Jr. (credited as the first American smith to produce a proper clip-point Bowie, and reported by some sources as a supplier of edged weapons to no less than Jim Bowie himself) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This knife does not bear the maker's mark but is very similar to multiple other knives known to have been produced by English and Huber. The knife measures 15" overall and the blade is marked "Sheffield Works /2/ Philadelphia" on the right side of the ricasso. Blank brass inscription bars on either side of the coffin style grip with brass guard, pins, and pommel. Very good, artificially aged blade, some lightening of the marking on the ricasso and scattered light pitting on the blade. The overall construction of the knife remains solid.
