The Cody Firearms Museum serial number verification lists this rifle with a 30 inch no. 3 half octagon barrel in .38-55 caliber, plain trigger, mid-range Vernier peep sight, windage adjustable front sight, no rear sight slot, checkered pistol grip stock, cheekpiece and Swiss buttplate when it was shipped on June 4, 1908 (sic). The rifle was later relined to .22 LR by Pope. The right receiver wall has been removed and the cut-out is marked "H.M. POPE." The hammer has also been modified. Fitted with a globe front sight, scope blocks (partially obscures address/patent marking) on the no. 3 barrel and Lyman tang peep sight. The highly figured checkered stock has a Winchester hard rubber grip cap, cheekpiece and Swiss buttplate.

Fine as period custom modified by Pope (see above). The rifle retains 60% of the blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. There is an area of minor pitting on the barrel. The buttplate retains 80% of the frosted nickel finish. The wood is also fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches and some wear in the checkering. The action needs work as the hammer does not hold at the half cock position.
