Description:

This U.S. contract Colt "Cavalry Model" single action revolver was manufactured in 1878 and inspected by Ordnance Sub-Inspector Henry Nettleton. Some of the revolvers within the 48800 serial number range are identified as issued to Troop K of the 8th Cavalry. Nettleton's distinctive "H.N." sub-inspection mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel, frame (double stamped), trigger guard, top of the back strap, side of the cylinder, and left side of the hammer, and the right side of the grip is marked his oval "HN" cartouche, while the butt on the right has an "N" stamp. The left side of the grip is stamped with the year "1878" above the oval "JEG" cartouche of Ordnance Inspector Captain John E. Greer. "P" proof marks are stamped on the bottom of the barrel above the "H.N." mark and on the side of the cylinder. The full serial number is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "8807" is stamped on the side of the cylinder and on the barrel under the ejector housing. The assembly number "465" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. A "US" property mark is stamped on the left side of the frame behind the three-line, three-date patent marking. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." The ejector rod has the early ''bullseye'' head. In the included letter Herb Glass discusses the overall condition of this revolver and notes that "I find this gun to be original throughout (the only exception a replaced mainspring) and in very fine condition overall retaining much original finish."

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 60% plus original casehardened finish, particularly strong and vibrant case colors on the hammer, 50% original blue finish with wear from holster use and cleaning leading to even fading to smooth gray-brown patina on the balance, some light pitting concentrated on the barrel and cylinder, and general mild overall wear from age and use, including mild cylinder drag lines. The grip is also very fine and has distinct cartouches and year markings, some dings and scratches, mild edge wear, and hand-worn finish. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive and high condition, desirable Nettleton inspected U.S. contract Colt Single Action Army in original Cavalry configuration.
