This is one of only 401 Colt Lightning slide action rifles the San Francisco Police Department purchased in 1898. These rifles were specially marked and numbered with special serial numbers on the lower tangs. "S.F.P. 266" is marked on this example. The actual Colt production serial numbers ranged from 82088-83998 and are stamped on the lower tang beneath the stock. The serial number "83366" is stamped on this example, and it dates to 1898. The rifle is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight on a barrel stamped with the two-line Colt legend ahead of the rear sight and "44 CAL" at the breech. A Rampant Colt is stamped on the left side of the receiver. The forearm has an outline carving, and the rifle buttstock is plain and fitted with a rifle buttplate.

Very fine, retaining 75% original blue finish with thinning to a brown on the balance. The upper receiver tang is mostly a smooth brown patina. The buttplate is a mix of gray and brown patinas. The wood is also very fine with a couple slight stress lines at the tangs and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This San Francisco Police marked Colt Lightning rifle will make a great addition to any Colt or law enforcement collection.
