Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1856 and features stunning factory engraving consisting of floral scroll patterns along with a very attractive dog's head on the left side of the barrel and "COLTS/PATENT" inscribed on the left side of the frame. Aside from the trigger guard, the revolver has matching serial numbers, and there is a factory dot marking above or below the serial number on the barrel, frame, and back strap. The trigger guard has serial number "55163" with the factory apostrophe marking below and similar engraving. The grip carving is interesting as it is a variation on the design based on the coat of arms of Mexico. In this version, instead of a snake, the eagle holds a banner, and the detailing on the head suggests it is meant to depict a bald eagle. It may have been made with an American veteran of the Mexican-American War in mind. Given the more frequent use of the Mexican coat of arms pattern, the choice on this revolver had to be intentional.

Rating Definition:

Fine as assembled with a mix of silver gray patina and 40% aged silver plating, darker aged patina on the frame, verdigris on the right side of the frame, and replacement trigger guard. The rear of the cylinder exhibits numerous scattered peen marks and modern replacement percussion nipples. The grip is also fine and has distinct carving, aged patina, minor age lines on the butt, and minor handling wear. The action is inconsistent but functions fine otherwise.
