Documented Finely Engraved and Gold Inlaid H. Genhart Patent 10-Shot Turret Revolver Formerly in the Stagecoach Museum Collection

Heinrich Genhart of Liege designed these interesting turret guns and pistols in the 1850s and received patents for the design in 1853 in Belgium and 1857 in the U.S. They are known to have been displayed at World's Fairs, including the Centennial Exposition (1876) and Columbian Exposition (1893) in the U.S. They fire tube primed metallic cartridges which are held in the ten-round turret and struck from below by the hammer. The lever on the right side cocks the hammer and also slides the barrel forwards and back. The rear of the barrel fits into the face of the turret creating a tighter gas seal and locking the turret in place. The turret is revolved by hand, and a small button on the right side releases the stop. The barrel has a dovetailed blade front sight. A notch rear sight is fitted at the rear of the action. The has various mask designs disgorging scroll patterns, gold inlaid chamber numbers, "+H. GENHART +/BREVET" marked on top, and a "crown/N" over the oval Liege proof between two of the chambers. The furniture also features mask and scroll engraving. The stock has relief carved scroll carving on the forend and a fluted wrist. "71" under the action and "202" on the trigger guard tang are marked in yellow paint. It is featured in "Antique Guns from the Stagecoach Collection" by Bowman on page 44 and on pages 118 and 125 of "The Stagecoach Museum Gun Collection" by Saign. Provenance: The Stagecoach Museum Collection; Property of a Gentleman

ConditionFine with 60% original blue on the barrel, 85% plus original blue finish and bright gold on the turret, traces of case colors and mostly mottled gray and brown patina on the balance, crisp engraving, and minor overall wear from age and storage. The stock is also fine and has crisp carving and fluting, general minor dings and scratches, and minor edge wear. Mechanically fine.
