Description:

Famously associated with the German and Swiss "landsknechte" mercenaries, the zweihander (literally "two hander") was generally used by veteran "doppelsoldner" troopers as an accompaniment to the "pike and shot" armament carried by the bulk of the unit. This example is attributed to the 19th century by a previous owner, likely for display or carry on auspicious occasions. Overall length is 76 1/2 inches, with a 57 1/2 inch flamberge pattern blade with nine bends, a pair of 10 inch wide guard hooks above the forte, and "AP" struck near the guard. The guard is 18 1/2 inches wide, with fleur-de-lis style quillions and guard rings on both sides. The grip is covered in textured brown leather, terminating in a pinecone-shaped iron pommel. Included with the lot is a hardwood display mount.

Rating Definition:

Good, with a mixed brown patina and scattered mild pitting on much of the metal surface, and mild wear on the grip wrap. Overall fit is good and tight, with no detectable play in the guard, grip or pommel. The display board shows mild wear and handling.
