Description:

This cased pair of Colt percussion Model 1862 Police revolvers were manufactured in the late 1860's. The revolvers have a presentation style French fitted rosewood case with red velvet lining. The case is complete with a cleaning rod, silver-plated oil bottle, bullet mold, screw-driver, powder flask, and tin of percussion caps. The silver-plated revolvers feature deluxe Germanic scroll engraving on a punch-dot background. The engraving covers the barrels, loading levers, tops of the forward potions of the cylinder chambers, frames, trigger guards, and back straps. The sides of the hammers are engraved with a wolf or hound's head motif. Each revolver has two piece mother of pearl grips. The barrels are roll-stamped with the one-line legend "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in panels framed by scrollwork. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped on the left side of each frame beneath a scroll-work arch and "36 CAL" is roll-stamped on the left shoulder of each trigger guard. The full serial number of each revolver is located on the underside of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, and back strap in an engraved panel or banner. All of the visible serial numbers on both revolvers match. These revolvers may have been cased and engraved by Hartley and Graham of New York. The silver-plated double cavity bullet mold is marked "COLTS/PATENT" on the sprue cutter and "36B" on the right block. The silver-plated powder flask has an adjustable charger and the top is stamped "AM. FLASK & CAP CO." Both sides of the flask body are embossed with an Eagle and Shield motif over two crossed revolvers and "E.PLURIBUS.UNUM" in a ribbon. The Eley Bros., 250 cap tin of Colt belt and pocket pistol percussion caps has a green paper label and japanned body. In "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS", R.L. Wilson states that cased Model 1862 Police revolvers are scarce and "double cases are almost non-existent". This is a rare pair of deluxe engraved, double cased, Colt Model 1862 Police revolvers.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 60% of the original silver-plated finish. There is has considerable flaking on the silver-plated barrel and gold-plated loading lever. The cylinder has traces of the plated finish with scattered age spotting. The engraving is crisp. The pearl grips are slightly yellow but remain fine with a hairline crack visible on left panel. Mechanically fine. The case exterior is fine. The interior is very good; the lining is faded and there are compression marks and several minor tears in the compartments and lining of the lid from contact with the revolvers. The accessories are all original to the casing and are all fine.
