Description:

The Winchester Model 1873 rifle, simply known as “The Gun that Won the West," is a legend of American firepower on the open frontier. Its legacy still resonates with modern collectors. It was often paired with a Colt Single Action Army or other revolver chambered for the popular .44-40 W.C.F. cartridges. This made carrying ammunition for both your rifle and your revolver simple and allowed an individual to be ready to defend themselves against man or beast in a variety of tough situations. The Model 1873 was a working gun that saw hard use and thus surviving examples often display all the character of hard use. This Model 1873, however, was well cared for and remains in extremely high condition. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top barrel flat has the two-line Winchester legend ahead of the rear sight. The rifle correctly lacks a caliber designation. The blued third model receiver features an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrations at the rear. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873." The lower tang has the serial number. The underside of the forearm is stamped with the number "114," and the right side of the stock wrist is stamped with the number "10." The buttstock is fitted with a casehardened trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod absent). Mounted with nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube retains 95% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The receiver retains 98% original blue finish. The forend cap retains 85% blue with some flaking turned brown. 97% plus original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The hammer, lever and buttplate retain 97% original case colors. The re-oiled wood is very fine with minimal minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A highly attractive, high condition example of "The Gun that Won the West," the Winchester Model 1873 rifle.
