Description:

Known simply as “The Gun that Won the West,” the Winchester Model 1873 Rifle stands as an icon of American firepower on the open frontier that still resonates with modern collectors, especially those in high condition like this example. The Model 1873 was a working gun that saw hard use. It was often paired with a Colt Single Action Army or other revolver chambered for the popular .44-40 W.C.F. cartridges. This made carrying ammunition for both your rifle and your revolver simple and allowed an individual to be ready to defend themselves against man or beast in a variety of tough situations. This is an extremely well cared for example. The accompanying factory letter states the rifle was received in the warehouse on July 15, 1907, and shipped on July 17, 1907, to order number 108558 with an octagon barrel in .44 caliber and plain trigger. The blued third model receiver features an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrations at the rear. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The upper left barrel flat has the two-line Winchester legend stamped ahead of the rear sight and "44 WCF" at the breech. A Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model/trade mark information, and the lower tang has the serial number. The buttstock is fitted with a casehardened trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod absent). Mounted with nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 95% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 90% plus original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The hammer and lever retain 90% original case colors. Patterns of original case colors remain on the buttplate. The wood is also excellent with some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. An exceptional Winchester Model 1873 rifle that will be a welcomed addition to any lever action collection.
