Description:

This rifle is accompanied by original letters from William Buchele about the ordering of the two rifles and a tomahawk in this sale Lot 1024 by a Mr. Smith back in the late 1960s. Buchele was one of the most pivotal 20th century gunmakers when it comes to the heritage of the American longrifle. In addition to his own rifles which varied widely in their array of ornamentation, he wrote "Recreating the American Longrifle" which has served as a guide for generations of subsequent builders and has helped keep the crafting of traditional American muzzleloaders alive. The rifle has traditional blade and notch sights, "W Buchele" signed on the top flat with some decorative engraved accents, "Buchele" signed on the lock, brass furniture with nice traditional engraving, inlaid nickel-silver accents with engraving, and highly figured curly maple stock with raised relief carving, including gadroon patterns ahead of the stock flats, drop flats, scrolls, and a crosshatched plateau under the cheekpiece which has a patriotic eagle inlay.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine with 95% plus original finish, light aged patina, shoed frizzen, some small insect marks, and minor handling and storage marks. The trigger sometimes needs to be reset manually, but otherwise the rifle is mechanically excellent.
