Description:

Offered here is an outstanding and very unusual S&W .38 Single Action Target Revolver with the serial number "0," indicative of what is known in the S&W field as a "Club Gun." "Club guns" are a special group of handguns S&W gave or loaned to factory personnel, shooting clubs and/or notable shooters as samples or test guns. These highly prized guns were generally assigned "zero" serial number prefixes, and several "cub guns" are known to have only "0" serial numbers, but there are unfortunately no records for these zero serialized guns. It is speculated that across the whole of S&W production only some 750 guns were made for these purposes according to Nahas and Supica on page 336 of the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson", of these 750, some 50 were made especially for the Wesson family. The revolver is fitted with the longer 6 inch barrel and target sights. The barrel rib has the two-line, two block address and patent dates flanking "MODEL of 91." The number "17838" appears on the cylinder and barrel. The barrel latch is unnumbered. The serial number "0" appears on the butt. The pearl grips have a S&W gold medallion.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 95% bright original polish blue finish with light thinning on the grip straps, a small patch of light spotting on the side plate, some mild high edge wear, and light handling marks. The hammer retains 97% vivid original case colors. Nearly all of the original straw color remains on the trigger. The grips are very fine with a couple cracks on the slightly proud base and highly attractive fiery colors. Bore has a bulge about 1 inch ahead of the breech, otherwise bright and crisp rifling. An outstanding and rare "club gun" for the serious S&W collector.
