Description:

This is an exceptional factory engraved example of an early Second Model Bermondsey production Kerr revolver. It has the cylinder pin retaining spring at the rear of the frame behind the cylinder, with a highly polished blue barrel, cylinder and frame. The lock plate, hammer, and trigger were casehardened. The loading lever was finished bright. The grip is sharply checkered English walnut. The left side of the frame is die stamped with an oval "LONDON/ARMOURY" marking, the right side of the frame is engraved "KERR'S PATENT 814", and the lock plate is engraved "LONDON ARMOURY./BERMONDSEY." The upper left flat of the barrel is stamped "L.A.C." followed by two London proof marks. The face of the cylinder and inside of the trigger guard are numbered "606". The side of the cylinder is engraved with the serial number, and it is proof marked between each nipple. The sides of the frame, part of the cylinder, barrel lugs, rear portion of the barrel, lock plate, butt cap, and hammer are nicely scroll engraved with a simple border. The muzzle has simple engraving, and the barrel flats are bordered with simple dual lines. Only the side of the cylinder with the serial number was engraved. The solid oak case has typical British construction with brass screws and other fittings. It is lined with green baize inside the lid and divided into eight compartments on the bottom. It contains a brass bullet mold for two conical bullets marked "AVC" and "54" (54 bore, approximately .44 caliber), a wooden cleaning rod with brass tip covering a ball screw, a screwdriver with a wooden handle, a 4-1/4 inch Dixon bag powder flask, an empty cap tin marked "ELEY BROS/LONDON" on the lid, a round wooden container with screw on lid containing two nipples, a pewter oiler and an original black tin of lubricating compound with the original green label affixed to it. The outer case lid has an inlaid circular brass plate.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The blue parts of the revolver retain 95% of the period refurbished finish, thinning on the cylinder, and some minor edge wear. The lock plate has strong traces of vivid casehardening colors at the hammer with the remaining areas having a smooth grayish patina showing much of the casehardened pattern. The grips are also in excellent condition with all of the varnish remaining, only a couple of very minor dents, and sharp checkering. All markings and engraving are clear and sharp. The case is excellent. There are a few light stains on the interior and a little deterioration of the fabric. All accessories are very fine. An exceptionally nice, extremely rare, beautifully engraved example of an early Kerr revolver with case and accessories.
