Description:

The revolver is a classic six-shot Model 1849 Pocket manufactured in 1862 during the Civil War and has the two-line Hartford address and standard markings and features, including matching visible serial numbers. The butt is inscribed "Geor A. Jones. Co. D/Concord. N.H." Includes a modern case fitted to the revolver and containing a brass ball/bullet mold, screwdriver, eagle powder flask, and three cap tins. Sergeant George A. Jones (1841-1863) was originally a corporal and is identified as serving in Company E of the 2nd Regiment of New Hampshire Volunteers and died from wounds received on July 2, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg during which the regiment had 353 soldiers engaged and in less than three hours on July 2nd lost 47 killed, 136 wounded, 36 missing, and 21 of their 24 officers killed or wounded in battle, including Colonel Bailey who was wounded. They were part of the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Division, III Corps and were placed in the Peach Orchard during the battle. Further investigation indicates Jones was mortally wounded by a hit to the spine that paralyzed him and led to his death at the end of that month. He was initially buried in Michael Fiscel's cornfield by a walnut tree but was later moved to the New Hampshire Plot in the National Cemetery at Gettysburg (see "Union Casualties at Gettysburg" by Travis and John Busey). The 2nd NH were using the controversial Gardiner exploding bullets, some of which exploded when Corporal Thomas Bignall of Company C's cartridge box was hit. They were the only regiment to make much use of this ammunition which could be used to damage enemy artillery and supply lines as well as producing debilitating wounds and deaths among the enemy soldiers.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 30% original blue finish, 50% original case colors, 75% plus original age darkened silver plating, distinct inscription and markings, absent wedge retention screw, and mild wear, including some light pitting. The grip is also very good and has some mild dings and scratches, edge wear, and most of the original varnish finish remaining. Mechanically fine. The modern custom made case is very good with minor storage wear. The mold is fine, and the other accessories are good.
