The firm of Gastinne-Renette originated around 1812 and was cemented by the marriage of Louis-Julien Gastinne and Joséphine Adèle Renette, son and daughter of the founders. By the time of the World's Fairs in the mid-19th century, they were the premiere source for dueling pistols in Paris and trained duelists how to use them effectively at their range. These pistols have small dovetailed post front sights, rifled barrels with "GASTINNE-RENETTE A PARIS" in etched panels and etched floral scroll patterns, ".1852 .805." on the underside of the barrels, a "crown/GR" maker's mark on the bottom of the breech plugs, floral scroll engraving on the locks and furniture, fixed notch rear sights on the standing breeches, "Gastinne Renette a Paris" signed below the hammers, adjustable single set triggers, spurred trigger guards, ornate pommel caps, "M29" marked in pencil inside the forends, and ebony stock with incised scroll, floral, shell, and twisted rope patterns carved in relief. They come in a fitted hardwood case with a mallet, measure, cap tin, mold, screwdriver, nipple wrench, wood containers, keys, and loading and cleaning rods.

Rating Definition:

Fine with the period refinished barrel having turned to a smooth plum brown, mix of French grey and darker patina on the lock and furniture, some minor oxidation and pitting, and general mild overall wear. The stock is also very fine and has some faint repairs, minor flakes, crisp carving, and light scratches and marks. Mechanically fine. The relined case is very good with mild storage wear on the exterior.
