Description:

One of only 4,495 Springfield Armory Model 1903 "Sporting Rifles" manufactured between 1923-1932. These were hand built by Springfield Armory using new Model 1903 National Match receivers fitted with star-gauged National Match barrels. The receiver rails, bolt assemblies, and triggers were hand polished for smooth operation like the Model 1903 National Match rifles. They were fitted with National Match nickel steel (NS) marked bolts, which were hand lapped and head-spaced. The bolt is correctly etched with the matching serial number. Standard receiver markings, with the barrel marked "SA/ordnance bomb/4-27"and with a star-gauge mark on the muzzle. Fitted with original straight grain American walnut pistol grip sporting stock, which uses a single barrel band and is fitted with a special, heavier "NRA sporter" style cupped steel buttplate. There is an original circled "P" proof inside the curve of the pistol grip. The barrel is fitted with a standard M1903 front sight base and blade, and a receiver mounted Lyman 48C target type micrometer rear sight. The included Springfield Research Service letter, dated October 4, 1986, lists the rifle as sold by Springfield Armory to Warren S. Corning of Winnetka, Illinois, on September 29, 1927. Includes a metal National Match slide-on muzzle cover. An excellent example of a Springfield Armory Model 1903 in the sporting configuration!

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall, retaining 90% original blue finish with scattered light handling marks and thinning, focused mainly around the muzzle, breech, and buttplate. The excellent stock retains a lustrous oil finish with the original and attractive raised grain. Mechanically excellent.
