Description:

This extremely rare full ivory stocked pistol by Henry Derringer is one of only two or three known. It has other special features also. The breechplug has silver bands at the front and rear. The engraved German silver mountings are silver plated. The barrel features gold fleck, giving it a very nice appearance, simulating Damascus and is fitted with a dovetailed German silver blade sight. The lock plate and the breechplug are both marked "DERINGER / PHILADELA". The sunburst "P" is on the upper left flat of the breechplug. The lock plate, hammer and trigger guard are nicely scroll engraved. The tang of the breechplug has a sharp division at the rear and is fully engraved, possibly indicating a special feature. The trigger guard finial is of the pineapple shape, indicating production in the early 1850's. The ivory stock has a silver shield shaped presentation or monogram plate inset behind the barrel tang and an inset plate on the butt, both have delicate zigzag border engraving. The grip area is deeply hand checkered. An extremely rare opportunity to own one of only two or three known full ivory stocked Henry Derringer Pocket pistols.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 95% of the original brown and traces of the original gold fleck. The casehardening on the lock plate and hammer are a smooth dark patina. The stock has a visible period repaired crack from the forearm tip to the trigger guard and on to the side plate, other extremely minor hairline cracks extend from the rear of the breechblock tang to the teardrop in the butt and it has an overall attractive mellow aged color to it. The checkering is sharp. All markings and engraving remain crisp. Mechanically excellent. An extremely rare full ivory stocked Henry Derringer Pistol in excellent condition. PROVENENCE William Locke, Frank Sellers 1973.
